Trezor® Wallet | Start Your Device (Official)
A concise and secure walkthrough to start your new Trezor® hardware wallet. Follow each step carefully to keep your crypto safe.
Before you begin — Trezor® Wallet | Start Your Device (Official)
Unbox your Trezor® device and verify the tamper-evident seal. Always download official software from trezor.io and avoid third-party links. This guide focuses on core steps to initialize your device, create a secure recovery seed, and perform your first safe transaction.
What you'll need
- Your Trezor® device, its USB cable, and the included quick-start leaflet.
- A desktop or laptop with an up-to-date browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Brave recommended).
- A private, well-lit workspace free from prying eyes and public Wi‑Fi if possible.
- A pen and the recovery card provided in the box (or a metal backup if you prefer long-term durability).
Step 1 — Verify packaging and serial
Inspect the box for tamper evidence. Check the device serial number on the Trezor® casing against the card inside the box. If anything appears altered or missing, stop and contact official Trezor® support via their website.
Step 2 — Visit the official setup site
Open your browser and navigate to the official setup page. Type the URL directly: trezor.io/start. Do not follow search links if you are unsure — phishing sites can mimic official branding.
Step 3 — Install Trezor Suite
- Download Trezor Suite from the official page and install it on your computer.
- Open the app and connect your Trezor® device via the USB cable.
- Follow on‑screen prompts — the suite will detect your device and guide firmware installation if required.
Step 4 — Initialize as new device or recover
Choose Initialize as new to create a fresh wallet. The device will generate a recovery seed (typically 12 or 24 words). Write these words down in order on the supplied recovery card. Never store the seed digitally—no photos, no cloud notes.
Security best practices
- Offline backup: Store your recovery seed in a secure physical location, ideally in a fireproof safe or another secure storage.
- Never disclose: No legitimate support will ever ask for your recovery words. Treat them like the keys to your vault — permanent and private.
- Firmware updates: Keep the device firmware current via Trezor Suite to benefit from security patches.
- PIN selection: Choose a unique PIN that you can remember but others cannot guess. The Trezor® device will request this PIN on each connection.
Step 5 — Add an account and receive crypto
In Trezor Suite, add an account (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). To receive funds, use the receive address shown in the Suite and verify the same address on your Trezor® device screen before sharing it with a sender.
Troubleshooting tips
- If your device isn't recognized, try a different USB cable or port and ensure Trezor Suite is allowed to communicate with your device.
- If you suspect the recovery seed was exposed, consider moving funds to a new wallet and create a fresh seed immediately.
- For advanced issues, consult Trezor's official documentation or community forums, but avoid sharing sensitive information publicly.
